Facebook Isn't Enough: Building a Professional Online Presence
2026.07.13
I was researching some business to do some work on my home and I kept encountering business after business whose only online presence was a Facebook page. Having only a Facebook page is a problem for two key reasons. The first is it can lead to potential clients questioning your legitimacy or professionalism. That is dangerous for your business when they choose someone else’s who feels more trustworthy.
Second, every social media site is rented space. Facebook, Instagram TikTok, whatever it is that you’re using and change their terms of services tomorrow without warning, they can shut down your account without warning and growth of AI tools are being used to flag accounts legitimately or illegitimately for breaking terms of services. As long as you only have social media and not your own website, your business is at the mercy of someone else’s businesses decisions.
If you are serious about your business you need a website because having a website, is critical because it lets you own the relationship with your clients and when set up properly functions like the modern equivalent of a phonebook listing. Your website doesn’t have to be complex, but you need to have one. It’s the first impression most people will have with your business and functions like a digital front door and that is true for any organization business nonprofit or house of worship.
Furthermore, this is why email newsletters are often recommended for organizations and businesses to maintain a direct contact link with your clients and potential client when you own your relationship you have a much more stable position. You still have to pay for the services that you use to maintain that relationship, but it’s better than betting on someone else else’s platform.
Another consideration for your website is to optimize it for search engines and generative artificial intelligence. Search engine optimization (SEO) is the traditional way of ranking on search engines using keywords. Today with the rise of generative AI it’s critical to consider adding Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) to help your site appear in AI generated answers, summaries and conversational results.
Having only a Facebook page or any other social media is not enough for serious businesses. Relying solely on someone else’s platform you are putting your business at risk and surrendering control of your online presence to someone else. Invest in your own website to serve as a hub for you business’s online presence and optimize your site for search engines and AI-generated results. Don't bet on someone else's platform - invest in yourself and your business by building a professional online presence that reflects your values and goals.
