State of the Parish
Document Design
Role: Designer
The annual State of the Parish report is a comprehensive summary provided by church leadership to inform parishioners primarily about the parish’s spiritual, financial, and operational status over the past fiscal year as well as highlight key achievements.
The project needed to be completed within a two-week turnaround, and was limited to four pages. A key challenge was incorporating a high volume of images, including the newly commissioned St. Margaret icon, while incorporating paragraphs of information and making data more visual and engaging. The design aimed to be brand-adjacent—resembling the parish’s identity but distinct from the standard visual identity. My role was to lead the layout and visual design, ensuring the report was informative, visually appealing, and easy to navigate.
Color Decisions:
Typically the parish uses reds, blues, and cream colors, with red as the dominant main color. Taking inspiration from the 40th Anniversary identity which uses blue, gold, and white and the secondary colors which consist of green and yellow helped inform the color palette. The purple was inspired from the Archdiocese of Cincinnati’s colors which incorporate a cool purple whereas the purple I selected is warmer to remind of the main brands red hues.
Type Considerations:
I started with Barlow for the body text as it is the brand font however I switched it to Barlow Condensed as it paired better with Bebas Neue the typeface chosen for the header text of the document. Bebas Neue was chosen for it’s eye catching boldness.
Imagery:
Imagery was selected based on key moments the organization wanted to highlight such as the 40th Anniversary Mass and Ground Breaking Ceremony as well as updated pictures from around our campus, highlighting the beauty of the campus facilities.
- Sacred Heart of Jesus - children near statue of sacred heart
- Tudor Rose - modified purple to match document colors but part of main brand
- Symbols of the Sacraments
- Blue Ribbon Eagle - school was a blue ribbon school for 2023
- Rays of Light - monstrance, light of Christ pointing to the true presence of God in the Eucharist.
Some of the data boxes are overlayed with imagery — the consecration of the host at the 40th Anniversary Mass on the Sacraments box and the Lamb of God described in the book of Revelation with the book of the names of those who will be saved that is carved into the high altar on the people data box.
